In his first question, the Tsar sought to know the best time to begin something. The scholars gave different solutions to this problem. Some advised to draw up in advance a table of days, months and years and to plan his actions accordingly. Other scholars advised to give close attention to the events taking place and decide which one was the most necessary to act upon. Some scholars advised the Tsar to keep a group of wise men while others advised the Tsar to consult magicians to meet a great urgency. The answer didn't satisfy the Tsar at all.

তাঁর প্রথম প্রশ্নে জার জানতে চেয়েছিলেন কোনাে কাজ শুরু করার সবচেয়ে ভালাে সময় কোন্টি। পন্ডিতেরা এই সমস্যার বিভিন্ন রকম সমাধান দিয়েছিলেন। কেউ আগে থেকেই দিন, মাস, বছরের একটি সারণি প্রস্তুত করে সেটা অনুযায়ী তার কাজের পরিকল্পনা করার পরামর্শ দিয়েছিলেন। অন্য পণ্ডিতেরা কী ঘটনা ঘটছে তা ভালাে করে লক্ষ করে সেই অনুযায়ী কোন্ কাজটি সম্পন্ন করা সর্বাপেক্ষা জরুরি তা নির্ণয় করার উপদেশ দিয়েছিলেন। কোনাে কোনাে পন্ডিত জারকে পরামর্শ দিয়েছিলেন জ্ঞানী ব্যক্তিদের একটি উপদেষ্টা পরিষদ রাখার জন্য, যখন অন্যান্যরা জারকে ভীষণ জরুরি অবস্থার মােকাবিলায় জাদুকরদের সঙ্গে পরামর্শ করার উপদেশ দিয়েছিলেন। উত্তরগুলি জারকে একেবারেই সন্তুষ্ট করতে পারেনি।
